WWOOF - Olive Farming in Tuscany, Italy

September 21, 2011 - September 29, 2011
We will be spending 9 days volunteering on a small olive oil producing farm in Tuscany. The farm is on a hilltop near San Casciano Val di Pesa, 17 km south of Florence. The farm has olive groves of various ages, a large vegetable garden and a few animals (horses, chickens and 2 dogs).  The two farm owners are Kirsten,  a New Zealand artists, and Pascal , a farmer, balloon pilot, water diviner and lute maker.
While on the farm, we will be helping prepare the olive trees for harvest in November. We will spend time cutting out the many suckers of the olive trees and clearing around the base of the trees.
To compensate for our accommodation we will work 4 hours a day on the farm. We will then have our afternoons to explore the surrounding area. Florence,Siena, San Gimignano, Pisa, Lucca are all near by cities that can be easily accessed by the local public transport from  the village. We also might have an opportunity to go to Kirsten's studio and learn how to printmake.
In our minds this is a perfect way to see Italy!  I can't wait for the amazing food!
